Imagine a forest spirit with flowers growing out of its feet, or a giant castle floating among the clouds, or the feeling of flying through the night on the belly of a giant Totoro. If you have no problem picturing any of these things, chances are you’ve already been introduced to the magical world of director Hayao Miyazaki.

Miyazaki began drawing at a very young age. His father and uncle built fighter planes during World War II, providing inspiration for many of his early drawings and leading to a lifelong fascination with aviation. At home, Miyazaki’s mother was a strong presence in the household, and taught young Hayao the importance of “thinking outside the box.” Not surprisingly, flying and strong female characters feature prominently in Miyazaki’s works. His films also often concern the struggle between good and evil, which Miyazaki sees as ambiguous concepts that do not oppose each other, but rather live side by side.

Miyazaki first gained popularity in Taiwan with the release of “My Neighbor Totoro.” He has continued to charm kids and adults alike, with follow-ups including “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “Princess Mononoke.” In 2002, Miyazaki directed “Spirited Away.” The coming-of-age film, about a young girl trapped in a strange spirit world, won him an Academy Award and widespread international praise.

Unlike most directors, Miyazaki is intimately involved in his film’s creation process, from start to finish. He has not only directed, but written and storyboarded almost every one of his movies. Interestingly, Miyazaki’s scripts are often incomplete, and evolve during the film’s production, allowing the director to develop the story wherever his imagination takes him.

In 2001, Miyazaki set to work on the Ghibli Museum, a site featuring the works of his production company, Studio Ghibli. The director designed the museum to be a lively, playful space that would bring to life all the elements of his fantasy world. He wanted visitors to feel compelled to touch the things on display and interact with the exhibits.

The museum, set amidst the peaceful greenery of Inokashira Park in Tokyo, is a wonderland of sculptures, stained glass displays, and painstakingly crafted installations featuring some of Miyazaki’s most memorable characters. Totoro greets you at the entrance, and on the glass-covered rooftop, the Lonely Robot Soldier from “Castle in the Sky” stands guard. Although adults are welcome to the museum, they should note that rolling around on the giant life-size Catbus remains the enviable privilege of kids – no big people allowed!
