While most writers prefer to disappear behind their typewriters, Ernest Hemingway chose to live on the edge. His life was a series of adventures, one after another. As a young man, he survived through war. He lived in exotic and faraway places, witnessing bullfights and going on safaris. But he’s best remembered as a literary giant who changed the face of literature forever.

Hemingway was born in 1899, just outside Chicago, Illinois. In his early years, he spent many hours exploring the great outdoors – something he would enjoy for the rest of his life. At school, he not only excelled as an athlete, but he was also a brilliant student. Working as an editor for his high school newspaper, Hemingway realized he had a talent for writing. At the age of 17, he started his career in a newspaper office in Kansas City.

When the U.S. entered World War I, Hemingway was anxious to head overseas and fight for his country. He tried to enroll in the army but was rejected because of his poor eyesight. Never one to quit, Hemingway joined the Red Cross and was assigned to be an ambulance driver in Italy. While helping to supply troops, his leg was injured by an enemy mortar, and he was seriously wounded. Despite his injury, Hemingway kept working and rescued an Italian soldier. For his bravery, he was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor. Hemingway would later state, “I know war as few other men now living know it, and nothing to me is more revolting.”

After war, Hemingway moved to Paris and worked as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star. But on the side, he began to write fiction prolifically. His second novel, The Sun Also Rises, became a bestseller. It described the life of bemused expatriates as they traveled through Europe. His next novel, A Farewell to Arms, was a love story set in Italy during World War I. Both novels drew upon Hemingway’s own life experiences and were deemed classics of the “Lost Generation.”

What separates Hemingway from other popular writers is his unique style. He was a master of refined words and concise, direct sentences. To Hemingway, it came as second nature. “My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.” A key concept that shone through his work was “grace under pressure.” Hemingway believed you could never know what someone was made of until they suffered through adversity. Many of his characters were hardened men, trying to find their way through the tough times in life.

As a writer, Hemingway was never at a loss for material. He was always inspired by the things he saw. While living in Spain, he became a lover of bullfighting. Although many Americans viewed bullfighting as barbaric, Hemingway shed new light upon the sport. “Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter’s honor.” It would be a recurring subject in many of his works.

At heart, Hemingway was a restless soul. He never stayed in one place long enough to set down any roots. After Paris, Hemingway lived in tropical climates such as Key West, the Bahamas, and Cuba. As he entered middle age, Hemingway enjoyed sailing out to sea and fishing for swordfish, marlin, and tuna. Out of his isolation on the water came the inspiration for his final masterpiece.

His classic novella, The Old Man and the Sea, was published in 1952. It tells the story of an old fisherman named Santiago, who is on a losing streak. He hasn’t caught a fish in 84 days. But while fishing far out on the ocean, Santiago hooks the biggest marlin he’s ever seen. For two nights, Santiago and the fish are locked in a life and death struggle. The book is an unforgettable tale about the reality of life, death, and growing old. It won Hemingway the Nobel Prize in Literature and would be his last great novel.

Sadly, after years of illness, Hemingway ended his own life in 1961. But his influence remains as strong as ever. In nearly every place Hemingway lived, there are tributes to him. His old estate in Cuba has been turned into a museum. In Paris, there is a Hemingway tour that introduces his favorite bars and cafés. Every July, his fans flock to the Hemingway Days Festival in Key West. They read his stories, fish for marlin, and even hold a Hemingway look-alike contest. It’s a fun tribute to a great writer who believed in living life to the fullest.
