In China, martial arts have been around for perhaps thousands of years. But in the West, they did not become a part of mainstream culture until the early 1970’s. The man responsible for introducing millions of Westerners to Chinese martial arts was the legendary Bruce Lee. Thanks to his incredibly popular kung-fu movies, Lee has become a cultural icon and is widely considered one of the most influential martial arts masters of modern times.

Lee was born in 1940 in San Francisco, California, but was raised in Hong Kong until his late teens. When he was young, Lee seemed more like a street fighter than a future movie star. He had a violent nature and was always getting into fights with other boys. Lee’s parents were dismayed by his constant fighting, so they decided to enroll him in a martial arts class, hoping it would help him channel his energy appropriately. Lee excelled at martial arts, but his street fighting only increased as he entered his late teens. Fed up, Lee’s parents sent him to America, where he attended the University of Washington. There, he studied drama and philosophy and met his future wife, Linda Emery.

In 1964, Lee dropped out of college and opened a martial arts school in California. It was during this time that he was discovered by Hollywood. Lee’s first acting role was in the TV series The Green Hornet, which only lasted for one season. When he struggled to land a starring role in any TV shows or movies, he decided to return to Hong Kong.

Back in Hong Kong, Lee was shocked to find that people recognized him on the street as the star of The Green Hornet. The show had been a major success in Hong Kong. Thanks to his newfound fame, Lee was able to land his first leading role in a movie called The Big Boss, which launched him into superstardom. He followed up The Big Boss with four more hit movies. These films were extremely popular in Asia and the U.S., where Lee became a household name.

回到香港后，李小龙很惊讶地发现街上的人们认得出他是《青蜂侠》的演员。此电视剧在香港相当成功。他刚刚开始上窜的名声让他第一次得以在电影《唐山大兄》担任主角，这使他跻身超级巨星之列。在《唐山大兄》之后，他接着演出四部卖座的电影，这些电影在亚洲及美国极受欢迎，「李小龙」成为家喻户晓的名字。

But just as Lee was reaching his peak, tragedy struck. On July 20, 1973, while visiting a friend in Hong Kong, Lee complained of having a headache. After being given a painkiller, he lay down for a quick nap. That night, when his friends came to pick him up for dinner, they could not wake him up. An ambulance was called, but the medics were unable to revive him. By the time he reached the hospital, Lee was already dead. The exact cause of his death remains a mystery.

但就在李小龙迈向巅峰之际，悲剧发生了。在1973年7月20日，李小龙在香港拜访一位朋友时抱怨头痛。吃了止痛药后，他躺下小睡片刻。当晚，当他的朋友们去接他用晚餐时，却无法叫醒他。他们叫了救护车，但医护人员却无法使李小龙苏醒过来。到达医院时，他已经过世了。确切的死因至今依旧成谜。

Today, Lee is remembered because of his kung-fu films, but there was more to Lee than just movies. Even though Lee was only thirty-three when he died, he had already developed his own philosophy of life and his own martial arts style, which he called Jeet Kune Do. As one of the first to combine acting with true martial arts skills, Lee has become a legend both in Asia and in the West.
