Vienna is a city rich in culture, and dominant in the European art and music scenes. Every year, the Austrian capital showcases the best in theater, musical concerts, and art exhibits at the Wiener Festwochen, or Vienna Festival, which attracts around 180,000 visitors annually.

维也纳是座文化内涵丰富且是欧洲艺术和音乐的重镇。每年的维也纳艺术节（Wiener Festwochen），英文称Vienna Festival，这个奥地利的首都所展示的顶级戏剧、音乐会与艺术展览，吸引了约18万访客。

Wiener Festwochen was first held in 1951. Post-war Austria was still recovering, but the country wanted to prove to the world that it could stand out as a cultural and artistic platform. The event attracted attention and praise, and has become a staple of the art world’s festival calendar.

The prestigious event lasts for five or six weeks and is held in May and June. This year, the festival’s program offers 41 productions from 23 countries. It promises to take its audience on “intellectual and sensory journeys far away” – outside Vienna and Europe. In fact, 2011’s “world’s end” theme should take audiences to every corner of the globe.

Wiener Festwochen is organized by the internationally renowned stage and music director Luc Bondy. Bondy, from Switzerland, has directed tens of operas and plays in his career, and he has acted as the Vienna Festival’s artistic director since 2002.

Vienna Festival is a feast for the eyes and ears, with both a music and a performing arts program. In 2011, the music program features the work of Giuseppe Verdi. His opera Rigoletto will take center stage at this year’s festival as part of Verdi’s 200th birthday celebrations.

The festival is not just about classical music, though. Contemporary Austrian composer Beat Furrer will have his work performed. In a bid to further attract future audiences, another Austrian, Bernhard Gander, has received an innovative commission to write a piece of music that will be performed in a shopping mall.
